2019 Volnay, Clos des Chênes, 1er Cru, Domaine François Buffet, Burgundy

Description

Not for nothing is Clos des Chênes among Volnay’s most celebrated vineyards. South-facing and steeply sloped, Marc-Olivier has some fine old vines here. They have delivered a richly scented wine, with hints of cinnamon a symphony of ripe red fruit aromas. The palate is juicy and silken. Drink 2024-2030.

Jasper Morris MW 90-93/100
Partly 80 year old vines and partly from a plantation in 1970 where there had previously been white vines at the southern end of Clos des Chênes. Some whole bunches have been used. Rich ripe purple, light reduction hides the bouquet, more volatile here, lively pure and dense though behind with a particularly rich raspberry fruit at the finish. Slight heat to finish.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com (December 2020)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Domaine Francois Buffet

Domaine François Buffet is a Burgundy family-run domaine, which dates back to 1692, and is currently managed by Marc-Olivier, son of François, though still with help from his parents. The family had a very successful negociant business, under the name Ferdinand Buffet, until the 1930s when fortunes were lost in the great crash. Even so, there is an impressive range of Volnay (Taillepieds, Clos des Chenes, Champans, Carelles, Clos de la Rougeotte) and Pommard (Rugiens, Clos Micot, Poutures) vineyards. Marc-Olivier uses some whole bunches when he feels the vineyard is suitable, though not for young vines. The wines are matured in barrel over 22 months, with one racking in the summer.
