2019 Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Evocelles, Domaine Louis Boillot & Fils, Burgundy

Description

A stony high vineyard on the same slope as Clos St Jacques, this faces east across the commune border into Brochon. In this cellar, Evocelles often gives a striking aroma of blood orange, though less so this year: the ripeness of the vintage has replaced it with mulberry and sloe, quickly tightening into the familiar, strict finish. Drink 2023-2029.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru, matured in used barrels only, required some coaxing on the nose, eventually offering blackberry, wild strawberry and briary aromas. Fine definition here, but you sense that it is keeping something up its sleeve. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and generous yet displaying satisfying grip and a fine bead of acidity. It gently fans out on the harmonious, silky smooth finish. This is a well-crafted Evocelles.Neil Martin, Vinous.com

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
