Description
The 2016 vintage was hampered by frosts and hail throughout the region, resulting in difficult conditions that naturally impacted on yield; a warm and sunny August allowed the grapes to mature quickly and fully.
The philosophy of Pol Roger is to release a vintage Champagne only when the climatic conditions produce an outstanding crop, and overall, the vintage is of excellent quality. Complex and rich, their 2016 Brut will age wonderfully for decades to come.

Jancis Robinson MW 17/20
Very tight, dense nose with some honey and orange notes on the palate. Already very drinkable with the acidity not especially noticeable, although presumably it will gain in aromatic complexity with bottle age. I found it less than enthralling when I first tasted it and gave it a score of 16.5 but when I was served a glass blind from my re-stoppered bottle a few days later, I was impressed. So is the lesson, don't rush your pleasures?60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. Blend of 20 grands crus and premiers crus from a later-than-usual vintage, picked from 10 September until early October. Average potential alcohol was 9.8% and average acidity was 7.5 g/l in sulphuric. Full malo. Dosage 7 g/l. Drink 2023 - 2030jancis_robinson_mw MW, JancisRobinson.com (June 2023)

About this wine
Chardonnay
Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
Pol Roger
Pol Roger is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. The house remains family-owned and has a reputation for producing champagnes of finesse and elegance which age very well. Pol Roger Brut Rèserve Non-Vintage, made from equal parts of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, is consistently one of the very best on the market, largely due to the high proportion of aged reserve wines in the blend. Pol Roger vintage wines, made from at least 60% Pinot Noir and up to 40% Chardonnay, are soft and fruit-driven in youth but, after ten years or so, develop great complexity and finesse. The Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, launched in 1984 and made from a secret blend, is a Champagne of exquisite finesse and balance and one that rivals the very best of the region.
