Description
Classically styled, this is an exceptional Gran Reserva combining grace and elegance. At six years of age, having spent three in barrel and two in bottle, the nose is showing development and refinement in an array of complex aromas; plums, red cherries and strawberries with nuances of vanilla, cinnamon and a delicate cigar box, tea leave-like herbal note. After a few minutes in the glass, the profile starts shifting towards more savoury aromas of undergrowth, porcini mushroom, cured meat and a balsamic touch, simply beautiful.
The palate feels fresh, with a vibrant energetic entry announcing its multi-layered character. Well balanced, tannins are perfectly integrated and provide structural support to fruit, spices and higher tertiary notes all in wonderful harmony; blackcurrants, wild strawberries and cherries intermingle with toasty notes of coffee bean and sweet spices, lingering on the palate that takes on to an earthy forest floor expression with a very long finish. Ready for drinking on arrival, it will drink well until 2035+

Tim Atkin MW 94/100
La Rioja Alta is one of the most traditional wineries in Haro’s Barrio de la Estación, famous for producing wines that are good to drink on release, but also age beautifully in bottle. This new Gran Reserva, made from Tempranillo with 6% Graciano for added backbone, is very much a reflection of the cooler, more “Atlantic” 2014 vintage. La Rioja Alta didn’t make its top two Gran Reservas – 904 and 890 – in 2014, so all of its best grapes were used for Viña Arana. Fine and elegant, with vibrant acidity, notes of coconut and cinnamon from the American oak and a core of savoury, refreshing tobacco leaf and red berry flavours framed by fine, caressing tannins. Old-fashioned Rioja at its glorious best.Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com (September 2020)
About this wine
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino
A high quality red wine grape that is grown all over Spain except in the hot South - it is known as Tinto Fino in Ribera del Duero, Cencibel in La Mancha and Valdepenas and Ull de Llebre in Catalonia. Its spiritual home is in Rioja and Navarra where it constitutes around 70% of most red blends.
La Rioja Alta
La Rioja Alta continues to be one of the benchmarks for traditionally produced Rioja wine. Established in 1890 at the same spot where their head office sits today, their three Reserva Wine brands, Alberdi, Arana and Ardanza are named after the founding families, all three of which remain shareholders. The company still maintains traditional Rioja winemaking practices whilst embracing many of the new technological advances.
