Description

Jean-Baptiste is fortunate to have a small holding of this top Puligny Premier Cru which he has transformed into a brilliant wine. Fine bright light colour, with a very chiselled nose, quite intense, building to a lemon finish, very pure and intense, superb persistence. With intensity more than weight, blindingly bright starry wine.
Jasper Morris, MW - Wine Buyer

Jean-Baptiste reports hardly any hail damage in 2013 but the crop was nonetheless limited by cold damp weather at the flowering. He began picking on 26th September, with all the whites picked before the wet weekend. Malolactic fermentation took a little longer than usual but no real problems in the cellar. The wines will be bottled in December, or January for the Premiers Crus.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets has a fragrant bouquet that gains vigor with aeration: dried honey and honeysuckle scents mixed with light dried orange peel aromas. The palate is well balanced with vibrant acidity, green apple and fresh pear, a slightly waxy texture on the second half that seems powerful but just lacks the finesse that I was hoping for. Still, this is an enjoyable wine, even if it is not cruising at the altitude I was hoping. Tasted May 2016.Neil Martin - 29/11/2016

About this wine

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
