2010 Bodegas Pintia, Toro, Spain

Description

Vega Sicilia’s owners, the Álvarez family, bought Bodegas Pintia in 1996. Located in the baking hot Toro region, just west of Ribera and dissected by the River Duero. Pintia is produced with 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) from ungrafted 40-60 year old vines. 12-15 months of maturation in oak from France (giving cool cedar aromas and structure) and America (giving vanilla and coconut flavours) adds to the complexity.

The vineyards are steep around 600m above sea level and the hot continental climate gives powerful black wines with noticeable smoky notes. Pintia’s aim is to tame the wild heat of the Toro region and make a wine with all the powerful, rich flavours of Toro, but with structural charm and elegance. Extraordinary value for money; 2010 is a superb Spanish vintage, producing a Pintia which combines huge concentration and depth with real refinement. A wine to enjoy over the coming 8+ years.

2010 Pintia is a big gutsy wine with a lovely rich textured palate. Dense savoury plum and nutty oak give an initial impression of a Rioja on steroids. There is a sweet strawberry edge but this is subsumed by the savoury dark fruit, gentle spice, finely grained earthy tannins, a viscous intensity. Stylish and satisfyingly with a burst of fruit in the finish emphasising its class.

The 2010 Pintia had already been bottled when I tasted it, although not released. The bouquet is very Bordeaux-like with black rather than red fruit, fine minerality and touches of graphite and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with plump, rounded tannins, a firm structure and great precision on the finish. This is what you might call a classic Pintia that already demonstrates great breeding and sophistication toward the finish.Neil Martin, Wine Advocate (April 2013)

About this wine

Tempranillo/Tinto Fino

A high quality red wine grape that is grown all over Spain except in the hot South - it is known as Tinto Fino in Ribera del Duero, Cencibel in La Mancha and Valdepenas and Ull de Llebre in Catalonia. Its spiritual home is in Rioja and Navarra where it constitutes around 70% of most red blends.

Bodegas Pintia

Vega Sicilia’s owners, the Álvarez family, bought Bodegas Pintia in 1996, attracted to the galet-strewn terroir in the northern Spanish region of Toro, the rich clay subsoils and the familiar altitude. They decided to produce an alternative expression of Vega Sicilia’s style of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from this site. Toro’s main point of difference to Ribera del Duero is the ambient temperature, which can blaze in the height of summer. The challenge here is to match concentration with elegance, a challenge met by Bodegas Pintia with no shortage of aplomb.
