Description
Zind Humbrecht's 2007 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Hengst, Selection de Grains Nobles shows an aromatic nose of rose water, intensely spicy, pineapple/grapefruit-scented nose that gives way to a palate of extreme elegance and well balanced sweetness. Concentrated flavours fill the mouth with lush lychee notes, honeysuckle, exotic spices and tropical fruits. Boisterously expressive yet graceful, this will hold for many years, gaining more layers of additional complexity and it will not begin to hit its plateau of maturity after 25-30 years. It is a candidate for perfection!

Zind-Humbrechts 2007 Gewurztraminer Hengst Selection de Grains Nobles their first such wine ever from this site, and vinified in a new mini-oval cask offers distilled-strength mint, sage flower, rose petal, and litchi. Licorice, herbal liqueur, vanilla icing, cinnamon candy, and candied citrus rind saturate the palate, their confectionary character backed up by enormous sweetness. This clings with abandon. This would make an amazingly luxurious dessert wine, but one imagines there being no tract record, as Olivier Humbrecht readily points out himself that it will become more complex and seductively drinkable as it matures, as well as perhaps more reflective of its great site. How many decades it will age cannot really be predicted either. And who knows when or whether such a wine will be harvested again in the Hengst by a Humbrechts, seeing it took 48 years for the first such wine to fall from their presses?David Schildknecht - 27/04/2010
About this wine
Gewürztraminer
Gewürztraminer is a high quality white grape which produces classic varietal wines in the Alsace region of France. It is the second most widely planted grape in Alsace and the most widely planted in the Haut-Rhin where it is particularly well suited to the clay-rich soils found in the Vosges foothills. It is normally fermented dry and produces golden, medium to full-bodied wine with heady aromas of lychees, rose petals and white peaches. It attains naturally high sugar levels far in excess of Riesling and this makes it ideal for sweet, late harvest wines. These can be unctuously sweet and luscious and the best can last for decades. Rieffel, Hugel and Zind Humbrecht consistently produce the finest Gewürztraminer wines in Alsace. It is also planted in Germany (specifically in the Rheinpfalz and Baden regions), Austria, the Alto Adige in Italy and to a lesser extent in Australia, New Zealand and California. Gerwürz means spice in German, although this pink-skinned grape tends to produce exotically perfumed rather than spice laden wines.
