Description
No other vineyard in the Zind Humbrecht stable is capable of leaving such an imprint on the character of its wine yet the harmony and delicacy so typical of the 2005 vintage shines through. Notes of spicy pear and melon can be detected on the perfectly balanced palate with the sweetness being offset by racy citrus acidity. Drink 2010-2020.

David Schildknecht 92/100
The 2005 Pinot Gris Rangen Clos Saint Urbain is less influenced by botrytis than most of the estates 2005 Pinot Gris, and the wine finished at 15.3% alcohol and 28 grams residual sugar. Peat, humus, grapefruit zest, and smoldering leaves as well as peach preserves inform this wines pungent nose. But for all of its sheer girth, power, and almost hyper-typical Rangen pungency, this displays remarkable clarity and freshness. That along with the wines sheer density keep its complex, profound, honeyed finish from becoming ponderous and keep heat to a minimum. Humbrecht feels that this can be a twenty year wine, and I am inclined to concur.David Schildknecht - 29/02/2008
About this wine
Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio
A first class grape variety grown in Alsace, where it is known as Tokay Pinot Gris, and in Italy, where it is called Pinot Grigio. In Alsace it is best suited to the deep, clay rich soils found in the north of the region where it produces richly honeyed, dry whites as well as superb sweet late harvest wines. At its best it combines the heady perfume and rich aroma of Gewürztraminer with the acidity one associates with Riesling. It ages very well, developing rich buttery characteristics.
